Almost Advent/Almost Thanksgiving

Dear Readers,
The best part of our day was religion when we made went to the computer room and made Wordles that described Advent. Advent starts on Sunday, December 1st. Wordles are computer arrangements that show our adjectives and words for a certain topic. We looked at the Mayflower by watching an author give tour on a replica of it through a Scholastic News video. There were so many things to learn about the Pilgrims and their journey and new life in America. Check out www.scholastic.com/scholastic_thanksgiving/voyage/ It is a site worth seeing. We have one more day before our holiday begins. What fun that will be!

Our Day

Dear Readers,
This morning we checked our homework from last night and we learned that the Ten Commandments are separated into two groups: Love God and Love Others. In math, we practiced our addition and subtraction facts by making a train with our chairs. We are trying to answer within three seconds. We learned there are four different ways or forms for numbers or numerals. Word form, expanded form, modeling form, and standard form. In E.L.A. we practiced our legibility key of size for cursive writing. We recognized tall letter size and descending letter size and lower case short letter size. We practiced writing exclaiming sentences before lunch. After dance, Reading, Writing Workshop went well as we are finishing up Theme 2-Nature Walk in our anthology. After we packed our book bags, we wrote down a Grateful Journal entry. Now we are getting ready for Friday.

Reasons to be Happy

Dear Readers,
Today in religion we described the Great Commandment. The Great Commandment is love God with all that you have and love others as yourself.  In math we learned what each digit's value is such as 76 the six is worth 6 and the 7 is worth 70. In E.L.A. we practiced the keys of legibility for cursive writing. The key we concentrated on was shape. We went to gym and had a great time. We read leveled readers to ourselves and with a partner. We had our Spanish and a test on vocabulary in Spanish.
We listened to two stories from Sister Ruth today. The first story was about children in a country called Pakistan and how they didn't have a school building or school every day until an American skier came to the village. The next story was about nature and how maple trees begin their life and become trees big enough to be sold to people. We began our gratitude list and telling what we are grateful such as family and friends. It is the beginning of a gratitude journal.

Facts on Tuesday

Dear Readers,
This morning we picked our Solar System bodies which means we now get to research a part of the Solar System. Then we went up to the computer room and researched on websites our part of the Solar System.
When we came back to our room, we had our religion assessment on the two main parts of the Bible called Old Testament and New Testament. In math we practiced counting, reading and writing numbers with ones and tens.
At the library, we found some books we liked. We worked on finding books in the classroom for our Solar System project. It was fun finding facts today. We learned some facts about owls and what owling is from our anthology today. "Owl Moon" was a story about a dad and his daughter looking for owls when the moon was bright. It was called owling. Then we read our just right books for us. Our day was full and fun.

Fast Wednesday

Dear Readers,
Today went really fast. We started out with learning about the New Testament and how this part of the Bible has four gospels. Gospel means "good news". It is good news that Jesus came into our world to show us how to get to heaven. Then we took another assessment on modeling number concepts and patterns. We learned about syllables and vowel sounds in syllables.

After gym and lunch, we practiced telling and commanding sentences and then read our story, "Around the Pond...". We had Spanish class and read our own trade books that are just right for us. We got to read one of the blog posts that you sent us.

Tomorrow we hope to read more of them. Every time our blog is viewed, the map on our blog shows us where you are in our world or our country. We get to learn so much through this blog. Tomorrow we will practice processing in line for Mass this Friday. We will get a special pin along with the 6th graders to show that we are preparing for our sacraments this year.

Mission-Halloween Day

Dear Readers,
Today was Halloween and Mission Day and what a day it was! We had the best time this morning over in the gym playing the games, getting our faces painted, getting our nails and hair done and singing popular songs karaoke style. It was great! Then we came back and did some review bingo in math and religion. After lunch we went to dance and then we set up to work on our saint dolls. What a fast afternoon it was! It was so much fun and we learned not only about our saint but how to use our creativity to make a paper doll. Thank you moms and dads that helped us get ready ahead of time. You are the best! Now we are thinking about trick-or-treating tonight. Have a great weekend. Don't forget to turn your clocks back this Sunday.

Dear Readers,
This morning we saw our 6th grade prayer partners and sang or read a Halloween poem or song with them. Then we worked on math and solved word problems using tables to see growing patterns. Tonight we need to make our own Word Problem using the information from a table already made. We learned some more facts about God the Father and taped our study sheet into our Study Book. Then Mrs. B., our Phys. Ed. teacher, came into our room and talked to us about safety with good touches. We are excited for tomorrow's Mission Day-Halloween Day experience.

Terrific Tuesday

Dear Readers,
We learned some facts in religion about God the Father who is the creator. In Math, we solved some word problems and found the solution by making a table and finding the growing pattern. We listened to a story about a moose in a bathroom and learned the difference between fact and opinion. Facts can be proven true or false and opinions tell what we think, feel, or believe. We went to the library and practiced non-fiction reading. Finally we danced to a planet song and sang it too. What fun we had!

Then we ate some of our pumpkin seeds that were baked in the oven and gotten from the seeds found inside our Jack-O-Lantern from Friday. They were baked especially for the second grade. Our prayer partners in 6th grade came with us and enjoyed the show with us. Ask us some more details about our trip when you see us.
